What is Happiness?

We know happiness as the one common goal every human being strives for.  Happiness, to us, is more than a state of mind, it is an end goal.  If one can consider themselves truly happy, what more in life do they need?

But from a chemical standpoint, what exactly is happiness?

The four chemicals that cause happiness are Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Endorphin.  Every single action every human being does is for the purpose of releasing these chemicals.  When we find a way to release these chemicals, we tend to repeat it.  This usually is a good thing, but has negative side effects like addiction.  There are many ways to release these chemicals.  I’ve discussed accomplishment and achievement in my previous blogs and their connection with happiness.  Diet and exercise can also release these chemicals.

In the end, no matter how we look at happiness from a scientific standpoint, the concept remains clear.  Happiness is the reason we do anything.  When faced with two choices, a human being will always choose the one that will make them the most happy.  If nothing else can unite the human race together in peaceful harmony, it is the study of what causes our actions.  It is happiness.
