Exactly How Many Unhappy Students Are There?
Stress in high school students is becoming too much to handle. Multiple tests in one day, projects during finals week, staying up till 3 am, sports, standardized tests, college apps; there is no time to relax. Students need time to get to know themselves, to build experience, and most importantly time to be happy. Are we truly happy taking tests and being forced into completing four hours of homework?
“More than a quarter of students (27%) say they experience "extreme stress" during the school year, vs. 13% in the summer. And 34% expect stress to increase in the coming year,” says Sharon Jayson with USA Today News.
With all this stress, there is no time to be a teenager. No time to even breathe. In the same article, Sharon Jayson shares that “As a result of stress, 40% of teens report feeling irritable or angry; 36% nervous or anxious. A third say stress makes them feel overwhelmed, depressed or sad.” This statistic shows how unhappy our students are and it needs to change. But how?
